The Radiotherapy services team were excited to take delivery of a groundbreaking (literally) radiotherapy machine last weekend – the first of its type in the UK. The Varian ‘ETHOS’ machine uses artificial intelligence to enhance cancer treatment by adapting treatments on a daily basis to optimize the delivery of radiotherapy. The machine will be up and running clinically in August.

Before then the physics team have plenty to keep them busy during the commissioning process. Some of the tasks include using a new water tank to verify the beam data as well as working on the new adaptive radiotherapy workflow and planning techniques. The team is excited to get stuck into this work as its a new area for everyone involved and really has the possibility of changing the future of cancer treatments.
