Biography

Liz Adams is Head of Radiotherapy Physics at Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, Guildford.  During her career, she has worked as both a clinical physicist and a research physicist, successfully implementing a number of advanced radiotherapy techniques into clinical use, including paediatric stereotactic radiotherapy, intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), tomotherapy, volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) and both intracranial and extracranial stereotactic radiotherapy.  She has authored several peer-reviewed publications in physics and radiotherapy journals and has presented at international conferences. Her main research interest is in improving quality and efficiency of advanced radiotherapy techniques.   She has also been involved in a series of developments to improve efficiency, including the implementation of paperless working and automated treatment planning, with Royal Surrey becoming the first centre worldwide to treat patients planned using a commercial knowledge-based planning (KBP) package in 2014.  She believes that collaboration is extremely valuable in furthering research and development, and is a member of a UK consortium of radiotherapy centres exploring the sharing of KBP experience. Liz strongly believes that changes to practice should be made within the context of a wider strategy, supported by data acquisition and analysis to allow evidence-based decision making, with predictions for future resource requirements and processes for review and audit.  She sits on the Radiotherapy Strategy groups of both the RSCH and the Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance, and is a member of the network oversight group for the local Radiotherapy Network.
