A trial involving 100,000 female volunteers to compare the use of traditional 2D mammograms with the new 3D breast imaging technology. The trial will measure the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of the two technologies.
A new type of breast scan
Traditional mammograms create a 2D image of the breast. There is now a newer type of breast imaging technology called 'digital breast tomosynthesis' which creates a 3D image. Early indications suggest this is more effective for cancer screening.
Objectives
To compare the cost-effectiveness of breast cancer screening using digital breast tomosynthesis or standard mammograms by measuring cancers identified in each group, measuring the number of cancers that are diagnosed between screening mammograms, and the size and stage of breast cancers.
The PROSPECTS trial team are looking to open additional trial sites over the next 6 months to help mitigate the impact of the pandemic and boost recruitment.
