{"id":198,"date":"2017-12-27T17:51:05","date_gmt":"2017-12-27T17:51:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8081\/medicalphysics\/?p=198"},"modified":"2018-06-01T11:44:57","modified_gmt":"2018-06-01T11:44:57","slug":"royal-surrey-takes-delivery-of-100th-new-radiotherapy-machine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medphys.royalsurrey.nhs.uk\/department\/2017\/12\/27\/royal-surrey-takes-delivery-of-100th-new-radiotherapy-machine\/","title":{"rendered":"Royal Surrey takes delivery of 100th new radiotherapy machine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Royal Surrey County Hospital has taken delivery of a brand new state-of-the art radiotherapy machine.<\/p>\n<p>The Varian Truebeam linear accelerator arrived at the Trust earlier this year and is the hundredth Truebeam machine installed by the firm in the UK and Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>Royal Surrey\u2019s Chair, Sue Sjuve, was joined by clinicians and colleagues from Varian Medical Systems to celebrate receipt of the milestone piece of equipment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_199\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-199\" style=\"width: 570px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medphys.royalsurrey.nhs.uk\/department\/2017\/12\/27\/royal-surrey-takes-delivery-of-100th-new-radiotherapy-machine\/hh-rsch-radiotherapy\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-199\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-199\" src=\"https:\/\/medphys.royalsurrey.nhs.uk\/department\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/HH-RSCH-radiotherapy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/medphys.royalsurrey.nhs.uk\/department\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/HH-RSCH-radiotherapy.jpg 570w, https:\/\/medphys.royalsurrey.nhs.uk\/department\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/HH-RSCH-radiotherapy-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-199\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Medical Physics Team<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Around four in 10 of all NHS cancer patients are treated with radiotherapy, which typically uses high-energy radiation from a machine called a linear accelerator (Linac).<\/p>\n<p>Royal Surrey currently runs seven Linac machines over two sites, which are used to treat 3,200 NHS patients each year.<\/p>\n<p>The new Linac will replace a machine that is 11 years old with the latest model, ensuring patients continue to benefit from the most up-to-date precision treatments.<\/p>\n<p>It is hoped that it will be fully clinically operational and treating patients by early autumn.<\/p>\n<p>Sue Sjuve, said: \u201cModern radiotherapy plays a vital role not only in survival, but also relieving the symptoms of cancer patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe continued investment in service at St Luke\u2019s Cancer Centre will ensure that the people of Surrey, Hampshire and West Sussex have access to cutting edge cancer treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adele Lyons, Varian Medical Systems\u2019 UK\/Ireland sales director added: \u201cThe NHS has invested heavily in new radiotherapy and radiosurgery treatment technologies and the UK is the first country in Europe to install 100 TrueBeam systems, our flagship product.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSt. Luke\u2019s Cancer Centre is one of the UK\u2019s premier radiation oncology departments and it\u2019s fitting that such a pioneering hospital should receive this<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Royal Surrey County Hospital has taken delivery of a brand new state-of-the art radiotherapy machine.
