{"id":543,"date":"2018-05-15T11:07:52","date_gmt":"2018-05-15T11:07:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/10.161.141.51:8081\/medicalphysics\/?page_id=543"},"modified":"2023-10-26T15:59:48","modified_gmt":"2023-10-26T15:59:48","slug":"non-ionising-radiations-and-lasers","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/medphys.royalsurrey.nhs.uk\/department\/non-ionising-radiations-and-lasers\/","title":{"rendered":"Non-Ionising Radiations and Lasers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Lasers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Regional Radiation Protection Service offers expert advice on laser safety and employer responsibilities to both NHS, private hospitals and clinics, including the requirements of The Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations 2010 and the latest MHRA Guidance.<\/p>\n<p>The service provided includes:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; appointment of a Laser Protection Adviser (LPA)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; templates and assistance with preparation of local rules and risk assessments<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; advice on establishment of a laser controlled area and the associated control measures<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; advice on additional protection measures required, including personal protective eyewear<\/p>\n<p>We carry out periodic laser safety reviews and are available to give advice in case of queries, accidents or incidents. We can also provide advice regarding starting a new laser service or the safety requirements for use of a new laser.<\/p>\n<p>We deliver a programme of BMLA accredited courses, including laser safety \u2018Core of Knowledge\u2019 training courses, which cover the syllabus in the MHRA and BMLA guidance, and Laser Protection Supervisor (LPS) courses. For mammography we offer 6 monthly testing in accordance with MDA\/98\/52. We are also able to assist sonographers in setting up local ultrasound QA programmes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ultraviolet<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We provide a service of twice yearly measurement of ultraviolet irradiance for whole body treatment cabins and PUVA units, in accordance with national guidance.
